"He went so far as to suggest that Indian swaraj activity could be postponed if Khilafat ask could be advanced. Thus from a Swaraj which meant self-rule for India, it got converted overnight to support for an imaginary Caliphate in faraway Turkey."

It boggles the mind that our ancestors fell for this bs and were lulled into a slumber by Mohandas Gandhi. Even the RSS is guilty of mobilizing support for Gandhi's Khilafat movement like blind sheep. Despite being formed to consolidate Hindus and eradicate the fault lines, the RSS should have chosen a better cause to rally around.

Very good article. "The moderates were an earlier generation of leaders like Gopalkrishna Gokhale and his followers who believed in a constitutional approach like appealing to the British Government. The extremists -- Aurobindo, Tilak --- believed in radical approached, like violent rebellion. Both of these groups did not like Gandhi."

I think we ought to follow Sanjeev Sanyal's advice and refer to these two groups as the loyalists and the revolutionaries, respectively. Otherwise, we lose the debate and play on the defensive against leftist historical revisionism as soon as we open our mouths.
